MIL PRF 131
MIL-PRF 131 Packaging & Materials
Currently, MIL-PRF 131 is broken out into three categories, or classes:
MIL Class 1- Plastic backing (non-woven)
MIL Class 2- Kraft backing (limited use)
MIL Class 3- Scrim backing (woven fabric)
MIL Class 1 is by far the most widely used and popular class for MIL-PRF 131 packaging, but CarePac offers packaging that can comply with all three classes. It’s important to note that the roll material itself has to be made by a company that’s approved by the DoD, and only two companies have this approval: Berry Global and Cadillac Packaging. As such, pretty much all our bags are constructed using materials from Berry Global and Cadillac Packaging.
Benefits of MIL-PRF 131 Packaging
Although there are different classes of MIL-PRF 131, all of these high-barrier MIL films have similar properties, particularly a low oxygen, water, and vapor transmission rate. The only material that can provide this level of protection is aluminum. As such, each of these bags will have an aluminum foil layer.
To be approved for use by the DoD, the MIL packaging materials must pass rigorous testing of a set number of specific criteria. Some of those criteria are its breaking strength, proving it is puncture resistant, and corrosion protection.
Additionally, the pouch must be heat-sealed to provide a strong, airtight seal. It sho9uld also be clearly marked with identifying information including the manufacturer's name, lot number, and a product ID number.

MIL-PRF 131 Packaging & Materials
MIL-PRF 131 Class 1 is a stretch film that’s used for packaging things that need protection from moisture and other environmental factors. Bags that are compliant with MIL-PRF 131 must adhere to certain strength and durability requirements. They must also resist exposure to chemicals and various other environmental hazards. These MIL films are Grease proof, water vapor barrier, and heat-seable.
Due to these characteristics, MIL-PRF 131 pouches are typically used to package sensitive military equipment, like computerized devices and guns. These bags meet very strict standards, and the products they package are all but guaranteed to be protected in extremely challenging situations.

What is MIL-PRF 131 Class 2?
MIL-PRF-131 Type 1 Class 2 pouches are designed for barrier use in military applications, but have slightly different requirements they must meet when compared to Type 1 Class 1 pouches. Currently, CarePac offers one type of MIL-PRF 131 T1 C2 SPEC film: KF 1312.
This film meets the criteria set forth by the Department of Defense. Pouches constructed from MIL-PRF 131 Class 2 films are guaranteed to meet the specifications required in regards to strength, durability, and resistance to environmental factors. It’s important to note that the requirements for Class 2 pouches are less strict than Class 1 pouches, so this type of packaging is used in less extreme conditions or for less critical applications. Regardless, they are crafted to the highest standards and will meet all necessary criteria.
What is MIL-PRF 131 Class 3?
Class 3 materials are thicker and more rigid, and require special testing to ensure they provide protection against EMI and RFI. Learn more about our MIL-PRF 131 Class 3 materials below:
