PFAS Free Food Packaging

What is PFAS Free Food Packaging?

PFAS free food packaging is exactly what it sounds like: food containers and food packaging that's free from intentionally added PFAS chemicals, technically known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These dangerous chemicals are man-made synthetic substances that have been used in consumer products and industrial processes since the 1950s. Known as "forever chemicals", restricted PFAs are toxic even at very low levels and can contaminate drinking water through the soil.

As you can probably guess, there have been major pushes in recent years by health and environmental advocates for food packaging, including grease resistant pizza boxes, food wrappers, takeout food containers, burger wrappers, food boats, and other types of food packaging to be made with PFAS alternatives.

Why are "Forever Chemicals" Bad?

PFAS have been linked to the development of a wide range of health problems, including cancer (specifically kidney and testicular cancers), hormone disruption, liver and thyroid problems, reproductive harm, and abnormal fetal development and lower birth weight. They have also been shown to interfere with the effectiveness of some vaccines.

Research and clinical testing is ongoing to understand the depth of PFAS toxicity, but evidence suggests that there are links between the following health effects and exposure to specific PFAS in food packaging:

  • Increases in cholesterol
  • Changes in liver enzymes
  • Small decreases in birth weight
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia
  • Lower antibody responses to some vaccines

Although the health effects associated with these harmful chemicals depends on exposure (dose, duration), individual factors (sensitivity and disease burden) and other health factors (access to safe water and quality healthcare), there is no denying that PFAS in food packaging should be avoided, as PFAS contamination and prolonged PFAS exposure is detrimental to human health and safety.

PFAS-Free Food Containers & Alternatives

PFAS chemicals are often added to paper packaging products by manufacturers as a water, great, and oil resistant coating. Another PFAS use in in the packaging industry is to use PFAS chemical coatings to increase base paper tear and break resistance. Perhaps most of all putting PFAS If you'd like to avoid being exposed to PFAS in food packaging, there are a variety of ways you can avoid these toxic chemicals. Many PFAS alternatives exist for paper food packaging and food service products that don't contain any intentionally added PFAS chemicals that put the general public at an increased risk for concerning health issues.

To avoid concern over PFAS in food packaging, opt for these alternatives:

Laminated Plastic Pouches free of PFAS

  • By default most laminated plastics offer grease resistance
  • Laminated bags are more durable than paper, and do not require PFAS coatings

Uncoated paper bags with interior

  • By laminating paper to a petroleum-based or bioplastic coating the need for PFAS chemical coatings are removed, and the bag is automatically more resistant to oil and water migration.
  • Paper with petroleum-based plastic coating
  • Paper with bioplastic coating (i.e., compostable products)
  • Bioplastic-PLA or similar
  • Molded fiber with bioplastic lining

Paper PFAS alternatives

  • If you're looking for PFAS free paper products such as sheets and rolls then look for deli paper sheets and bags with wax or bio-based coating instead of PFAS coated.

The above food packaging options do not need to con contain PFAS compounds and can be used by restaurants across the country in the form of plates, bowls, clamshells, and take-out boxes. Take your commitment to the health and safety of your consumers even further by investing in food packaging that's made from biodegradable or compostable materials -- your customers are sure to love your commitment to both the environment and their health.
