Gauge to Mil to Micron Conversion

Gauge to Microns Conversion Chart

Conversion of micron to millimeter is important to ensure that your film thickness is correct.

Gauge conversions of laminated plastic materials and coex film materials can be a little unusual for people who have not worked with these materials before. Mil to Micron conversion is usually the most important conversion to make when working with flexible barrier materials. Having a reference chart including all of the units of plastic thickness measurement used in packaging can help. Use the chart to convert mils to microns, microns to mils, microns to millimeters and more.

Gauge is usually reserved for thicknesses below 1 mil.

Mils is a US unit of measure and Micron (um or Micrometer) is a metric system measurement of thickness.

Microns measurements are usually rounded to the nearest whole integer.

Blow film thicknesses are controlled by the size of the “bubble” that forms when extruding the plastic. Laminated plastics usually are at a minimum 2 mil (50.8um), but can range anywhere from 2 mil to 5.5 mil for most commercial applications.

Some Mil-Spec packaging materials can be as much as 10 mil or 20 mil in thickness.

Know the microns and need to know the film mm? Need to convert the micron to mm? Search no more! Here's a handy conversion table for hand wrap film and machine film.

Why Packaging Thickness is Important

If your film is below spec in regards to thickness, your packaging can fail...either by bursting, splitting or leaking. Packaging made from plastic materials that are below spec in regards to thickness are also not as effective at blocking oxygen and other contaminates, which can cause your product to degrade quickly. The last thing you want to do is stretch plastic materials too thin when creating your packaging. One of the services we provide is to make sure our protection film is made at the optimum thickness to insure the quality of your packaging. If you need help with conversion, or if you don't understand the ideal thickness for your packaging, just give us a call!
